English Speaking Day was fun.  The English Cafe at lunch was buzzing with English conversation – and lots of questions to complete the bingo cards.  This was a good exercise in asking questions and finding out some interesting facts about some teachers.   I do wonder where some teachers keep all those shoes.  The Aladdin production by Chunky Onion in the afternoon was a riot – especially the scene with select staff dancing on stage.  To finish the day, there was a short but very active drama workshop.

Form 7 students

After reviewing a transcript of one discussion, we agreed that there are many good ideas that are getting a little lost because of some problems with grammar and vocabulary.   You need to spend at least 15 minutes every day reading aloud and watching English News – or something like BTN/BBC.  Your knowledge of collocations, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and intonation will all improve.

Bury your head in the sand

ostrich

This is an idiom that means to refuse to think about an unpleasant situation.   Some people think that an ostrich will bury its head in the sand when in danger.  Other people say this is a myth.

Some students in class today were trying to bury their heads in the sand by running away from the tape of their discussion.   I don’t know why really – as parts of it were very good.  You must do some reflection on your speaking so you are aware of what you need to work on to improve.

Speaking and taping

I have a number of discussions and presentations on tape.  These are a valuable resource – one that will help you look at your speaking skills, reflect and look for ways to improve.  These are in MP3 format.  You can get yours by giving me your e-mail.  I would like to have 10 minutes with you – or with your group to discuss how well you did on this activity.  I am in the English Centre most days at lunchtime (not Tuesday) .  You can also make a time to see me after school.  If you invest 15 minutes in this, you will do much better in the speaking section of your exam.
